In gua sha, the therapist strokes oiled skin with a smooth-edged tool. In cupping, cups are placed on the skin and suction lifts it. Both are usually done on the back and shoulders, both feel intense but should not hurt, and both leave red or purple marks that fade within about a week. At Oasia Wellness each is a 30-minute add-on to any massage.
The difference at a glance
| Gua sha (scraping) | Cupping | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's done | Repeated strokes with a smooth-edged tool over oiled skin | Cups hold the skin under suction for several minutes |
| Feels like | Firm scraping and warmth | A tight, pulling sensation |
| Marks | Red streaks along the strokes | Round red or purple circles |
| Fade in | Usually 2 to 5 days | Usually 3 to 10 days |
About the marks
The marks come from tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin. They look dramatic but are not painful to the touch, and they fade on their own. If you have a wedding, a beach day or a sleeveless outfit coming up, plan your session at least a week ahead.
Traditional practice reads the colour of the marks as a sign of what is going on in the body. There is no scientific evidence that a darker mark means more “toxins” leaving the body, so we don't make that claim.
What are they good for?
People choose gua sha and cupping when their back, neck or shoulders feel tight and heavy, and most say the area feels looser and warmer afterwards. Some small studies suggest short-term relief for neck and back discomfort, but the evidence is limited. Treat them as a way to relax tight muscles, not as medical treatment.
Who should skip them
- Anyone taking blood-thinning medication or with a bleeding disorder.
- Skin that is sunburnt, broken, infected or has a rash.
- Anyone who bruises very easily or has very thin, fragile skin.
- Cupping uses warmth and suction: tell us if you have diabetes or reduced sensation in your skin.
After your session
- Keep the area covered and warm for the rest of the day. Traditional advice is to avoid a cold shower for a few hours.
- Drink water and take it easy. Mild soreness for a day is normal.
- Let the marks fade before your next session on the same area.
How to add one to your massage
Gua sha and cupping are add-ons: they go with any treatment and add 30 minutes to your visit. Tell us when you book on WhatsApp or when you arrive. Members booking online can tick the add-on on the booking page.
Before you book
- We don't offer treatments during pregnancy. If you have a recent injury or surgery, fever, broken or infected skin, or a serious heart condition, please check with your doctor first and let us know when booking.
Common questions
Does gua sha hurt?
It feels firm and warm, and tight areas can be tender, but it should not be painful. Tell your therapist to go lighter at any time.
How long do cupping marks last?
Usually 3 to 10 days, depending on your skin and how long the cups were on. Gua sha marks usually fade in 2 to 5 days.
Gua sha or cupping: which should I choose?
Choose gua sha for a broad area that feels stiff, such as the whole upper back. Choose cupping for a few specific tight spots. If you are unsure, ask your therapist once they have felt the area.
Can I have them while pregnant?
Sorry, we don't offer treatments during pregnancy.
